Me using my watch circa 2017 on a trip up to Boston Basin. It looks a little less worn down than it does now!
This thing is, in one word, a beast. It has been my diehard watch for what, like 4-5 years now?! I wear it on my wrist every day, and track all of my activities with it. Majoring in Exercise Science, I happen to love the statistics of speed, cadence, elevation gain, mileage, etc. I love all of it, and my Fenix 3 lets me track it all. When I was looking for a watch, I was looking for one that was had a decent battery life, an altimeter, and also could let me "backtrack" any sort of track that I had made. Essentially, if I got lost, I could use it to find my way back. The Fenix 3 ticked all those boxes, and when I found a sale for it, I sprung.
This watch has let me geek out during my outdoor activities for years now, and it was worth every penny in my mind. With the breadcrumb feature (the backtrack feature), have even used it to get myself out of sticky situations. One night on an exit from a ski in British Columbia, my husband and I were on the verge of digging ourselves a snow cave for the night before I remembered that I had tracked our ascent. My watch kept us from a cold night, and we were able to find our way back!
PROS:
All the features are there - mileage, cadence, elevation, time, breadcrumbs, I can even upload a map if I want.
Rubber strap is great, and doesn't chafe.
Waterproof, and can track water activities. I use it all the time to track swims in Lake Washington!
Strapping system is secure, and even when wearing over my wetsuit, I'm not worried about it falling off.
CONS:
Rubber strap does wear down and break over time. I have had to replace mine a couple times. Luckily it doesn't happen too frequently, and it is easy to replace yourself.
Watch face is big, and I hit it on things every once in a while.
Loading a map on to the watch is a bit of work, and not very convenient. I always just end up using my phone if I need a map.
My watch now in 2020. A little worn down on the surface, but still a workhorse.
Overall with Garmin, it seems you get what you pay for. At the time I bought this watch, it was Garmin's top of the line, and it has lasted that way as well. I know others who have bought Garmin products that aren't their top watch and haven't been very happy with it. From running, skiing, swimming, cycling, you name it, I have been happy with this watch. Happy exploring!
