In the fall of 2019, I started a marathon training program, and along with it I started looking into new trail shoes. I had been running in Brook's Puregrits but I knew they didn't have a ton of life left in them. After a couple weeks of training, my Puregrits blew out at the outer forefoot, and it pressured me to get a new pair. Luckily, I was running at Discovery Park when my shoes blew out, and I was able to jaunt down to 7 Hills Running (The BEST running store in Seattle - especially for you trail nerds), and try on a few pairs and I ended up walking away with a new pair or Topo Ultraventures. I was being persuaded by the Altra cult to look into Altras since my feet are wide. I gave some Altra shoes a shot and while the forefoot felt great, I couldn't shake the feeling that my heels weren't quite sitting well in the shoe.
I asked if I could try some Topo's, and as soon as I put it on I felt more snugness in the heel, and my toes could still breathe. Perfect. I bought the shoes from them and have loved them since. I finished off my marathon training with them, ran them throughout the summer, and they're still trucking along this winter, though they're showing wear for sure. I took them on trips such as Mt. Daniel, Glacier Peak, and the Loowit, and I've found that the wear while travelling on boulder feilds is where these shoes start to degrade fast. I'm a little worried about blowing out the outer forefront of the shoe because of this, but I'll keep you all updated on if that occurs or not.
They've seen some wear after a couple hundred miles, but they've got some life left
Pros:
Great for wide forefoot people
Seats my heels well
Grip works well for most things. Mud can be slippery, but there's a point where no shoe can conquer our western WA mud.
Cons:
Durability is my biggest fear here. I haven't had them go yet, but I'm worried about all of the mesh.
These ended up lasting me somewhere in the mid 300 mile range. Not too bad according to my history of trail shoes! Would have liked it to last a little longer, however.
