When picking this stove, I was looking for something that was reliable, not too heavy, and used white gas. Eventually you get high enough and cold enough that pressurized isobutane isn't a reliable fuel source, and you need to go to white gas. Dan and I go into those environs frequently, so we figured getting a white gas stove was inevitable. We figured, why not get the universal version of the Whisperlite since it could be nice to have the option to use isubutane if we needed to.
So far, we've had the stove for a couple of years and we really only use it in the white gas configuration. I think if we were to do it over again we'd probably just get the "International" version of the whisperlite, but we still really love using the universal since we have it. And who knows? Maybe one day we'll be on a big mountain, run out of fuel, and only have access to a teammate's isobutane? In the meantime, white gas is cheaper anyway, and even when Dan and I use it car camping, we use white gas.
Pros:
Pretty light - 11oz
Reliable
Easy to problem solve if issues arise
Can use white gas or isobutane
Cons:
Switching it from white gas and iso is not super straightforward
If you're not used to using white gas, it can be complicated to light it at first
